Choosing Car Tyres

Your daily driving needs determine which tyre will be right for you. Ongoing maintenance for your vehicle means that regular replacement of your tyres is important in keeping the vehicle in its best operating condition. If you only drive a small amount each day, such as to and from your child’s school, there will be no need for high-priced performance tyres for your car that will be expensive. Regular open road driving will require a different type of tyre than everyday driving in city traffic. Getting the most expensive tyre that is available on the market is not always the best option. On the one hand, you can expect quality from these expensive brand names and may also benefit from a warranty period that ranges from 3, 6 or 12 months. But, these expensive tyres may only be that price because the retailer you have chosen is making a large margin on them, not due to their overall benefits for your car. Cheaper tyres can give you some savings up front, but could mean that you will be replacing tyres more often due to their lack of quality. The Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) tyres are the type that come with your vehicle, and many car dealers will you allow you to purchase new sets of these. Whilst OEM tyres are guaranteed to be well constructed, they may not always be the cheapest, or well suited tyre for your needs. Retreaded tyres are a very cheap alternative to purchasing OEM, or brand name tyres. These retreaded tyres are made from the remaining ‘husks’ of older tyres. This offers both a huge advantage, and a huge disadvantage. Retreads provide you with a full new tread on your tyre, for a very cheap cost. But, you have no idea on the quality of tyre that these ‘husks’ were reclaimed from, meaning you may be buying an unsafe tyre. A tyre with a more balanced tread pattern can offer you good performance through changing weather conditions across the year. Another solution may be to have two separate sets of tyres that you can change out through the year. Buy a wet weather set of tyres for the winter months when the roads will be colder and have less traction to them. For the summer months, dry weather tyres will offer good balance and control. Shop around the retailers that are available in your area before you go out and purchase new tyres. Tyre retailers will often price match one another on similar tyres, so knowing what is available to you will give you a leg up in searching for new tyres. When you do replace your tyres, try to get four new tyres at a time. Tyres will often wear differently between front and back, so a regular rotation of your tyres every few months will mean an even wear pattern and allow you to always know when your tyres will require replacement.
